Sichuan-Tibet Highway (From Chengdu to Lhasa)
2,400 kilometers via the northern route: Chengdu, Ya’an, Kaligding, Garze, Dege, Chamclo, Bamda, Baxoi, Bome, Bayi, Lhasa. 2,100 kilometers via the southern route: Chengdu, Ya’an, Kangcling, Litang, Batang, Markam, Bamda, Baxoi. Bome, Bayi, Lhasa. Travelers have to cross some high mountains and torrential rivers on route and they may encounter landslides or mudstone flows. Many scenic spots may be found on the road. The whole highway wil soon be asphalted for its full length.
Qinghai-Tibet Highway
This begins at Xining in Qingliai and ends, 1,900 kilometers later, in Lhasa. The highway goes through Chaka, Dulali, Golmud, Amdo, and Nagchu before arriving at Lhasa. It is of great importance because it links northern Tibet with the hinterland of China. Its average altitude is over 4,000 meters. The highway goes through Koh XiI, the vast grassland in northern Tibet, and scales the Kunlun Pass at 4,800 meters and the Danggula Pass at 5,800 meters. It is the highest asphalt road in the world and is the shortest road link between the hinterland and Tibet. It has the best road conditions and is the safest of all the highways into Tibet. It is the road by which most materials are transported into and out of Tibet.
Xinjiang-Tibet Highway
This begins at Yecheng County in Xinjiang and goes via Kudi, Marza, Dahongliutan, Mount Jieshan into Tibet. It goes by Rutog, Gar, and goes along the northern side of the Himalayas to Lhaze County. The total length of the highway is 1,500 kilometers. The road conditions are poor.
Yunnan-Tibet Highway
This begins at Xiaguan in Yunnan, via Jianchuan and Zhongdian counties and goes into Tibet by way of Yanjing and Markam. It has a total length of 710 kilometers and is the lowest-altitude highway to Tibet, but it passes through some very complex geology where landslides and mudstone flows are frequent occurrences. The natural scenery on the road is very good.
Sino Nepal Friendship Highway
The starting point of Sino-Nepal Friendship Highway is located at Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The highway passing through Hangmu Friendship Bridge (Sino-Nepal Friendship Bridge) at Kodari to Neyalamu County in Tivet and crosses Shigatse and then to Lhasa. The whole distance of the highway is over 900 kilometers.
